Ask an Artist: Interview with Jim Patterson from Two Rivers Paper

Season 5, Episode 2: Interview with Jim Patterson from Two Rivers Paper

If there is one material that nearly all Artists use, whatever their medium, it's paper. In this episode, Peter and Tom talk to Jim Patterson from Two Rivers Paper in Somerset; makers of fine handmade paper for Artists.

In the first part of the episode, Jim talks about how he started in the trade, his experience in industrial paper mills and how important this foundation was for starting his own business, making handmade paper for Artists.

After the break, Tom, Peter and Jim delve deeper into the process of making paper which Jim explains, from sourcing raw materials through to selling direct to the customer.

There’s a lot of technical information in this part of the show and Jim provides a really fascinating insight into the craft of paper making.

This week’s takeaway… there’s a huge variety of materials available to Artists and often, the larger, high-street, chain stores are not necessarily the best place to source our materials as they cannot possibly stock the full range. Going direct to smaller suppliers, like Two Rivers Paper, gives us Artists a chance to try new things. Handmade paper is a different entity to mould-made and industrial made paper and we should all, at least, give it a try!
