Ask an Artist: Planning Meeting

Season 6, Episode 1: Planning Meeting

In this episode Peter and Tom have a planning meeting for the forthcoming year. Rather than simply share their advice, in this episode, they let you "behind the curtain", to eavesdrop on their own planning meeting for the year.
Starting by looking back and reviewing positives and negatives from the last 12 months, Peter and Tom use this reflection to plan what needs to stay, go and be changed, as they move into the coming year.

In part one, they both share 3 things which went well in the last 12 months and 3 things which they were not so happy with. From this, they are able to review what their priorities are for the coming year. See below an example of a “Planning Meeting Agenda” which may help you when thinking about a long-term plan for your own business:

In part two, Peter and Tom talk about how they plan to achieve their goals and one thing both of them agree on is that structure is key: in order to achieve the long-term goals, there has to be some short-term planning. Rather than simply writing a to-do list, perhaps writing one like the example below, where you assign priorities to tasks and assign them a slot in a weekly or monthly timetable, might help you as much as it has helped us?

This week’s takeaway… although having a structure and a plan may sound like the antidote to creativity, often it has the opposite effect; guarding our time from other tasks which inevitably crop up and giving us creatives the space within which to find freedom and make our art. Remember that if you want your art to become your job, there has to be an element of treating it like a job - if you don’t know what success looks like for you, or what the goal is, how will you know if you have achieved it?
