Episode 72: Listeners Questions VI

The Useful Stuff

1 - What should I look for when buying a new painting easel?

Really think through what you need in an easel, especially its size and portability! Consider what method of working suits your medium and subject matter; do you need to work outside, or at a particular angle, squeeze into small spaces or work on giant canvasses? Do the research and decide exactly what you need. Shop wisely and check out second hand or discounted easels throughly to make sure they really do represent a bargain. As Peter says, an easel is a friend for life!

2. What should I do about taking on a print commission? Can I sell the print to others afterwards?

working to commission when producing an edition of prints can be confusing so it is important to ensure the client really understands that you are potentially making multiples of the same image. Laura suggests two solutions. The image is something you can definitely sell to other clients. In this instance charge the commissioning client the cost of buying a print on the understanding that you will be selling the rest of the edition as you would any edition of prints. Sell the remaining prints on at the same price. The Print isn’t something you can sell on. Charge a higher price and treat the print as a unique artwork with the client as exclusive owner. You can then discuss a fee for making them either a single print or an edition.

3. I’m curious about approaching an arty publishing company to write an article for them. WHat’s would you say is the best approach to do this?

Really do your homework and write up some sample articles to offer your editor. Make sure you understand each magazine’s audience and ethos - tweak your sample articles to make them relevant to each publication. Be persistent and upbeat in contacting the magazine. Be proactive and suggest subjects that might work well for the publication and be open to their suggestions too.
